Cougars Defeated By Chieftains
12/20/18 -

During crunch time against Seminole Tuesday night inside the Cougar Activity Center, Seminole used a 9-3 run in the final two minutes of the game to push past the Cougars 49-45.

The Chieftains, ranked No. 15 in Class 4A, improved to 6-1 on the year, while Ada (No. 14 in Class 5A) fell to 4-3..

“We had opportunities. I think it was about missed opportunities for us, whether it be missing wide-open shots or layups or taking care of the basketball,” said Parks, “We’ll get better. We have guys out there that really haven’t been in those situations before. But they will get better. They’re too skilled not to.”

Super sophomore Jaxson Robinson scored on a nice feed from Cody Smith at the 2:54 mark of the third quarter to tie the game at 40-40.

Cepado Wilkins and Trevor Brinker scored back-to-back baskets to push the Seminole lead to 44-40 with 2:15 remaining.

Smith recovered a loose ball in the backcourt and fired a long pass to Robinson, who was fouled on his way to the basket. He hit the first of two free throws with 1:27 left to get Ada within 44-41.

Tanner Gilliam scored in the paint following two more free throws by Seminole’s Jaxon Bond to make it 46-43 with 39.2 seconds on the clock.

Seminole iced the game with two more free throws by Brinker and one from Wilkins that put the visitors ahead 49-43.

Robinson hit a layup at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Robinson was on fire for Ada early, scoring 13 points during a game-opening 19-9 Ada surge that he capped with a 3-pointer with 5:55 to go in the second period. However, Seminole used a box-and-one defense to blanket Robinson for most of the rest of the game, and Robinson didn’t score again until the fourth quarter. He finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.

“Jaxson really shot the ball well and then they went to a box-and-one, and it took us a little while to adjust to it,” Parks said. “I told him early in the year he can expect that. It’s going to happen. He just has to continue to play and not worry about it. That’s what happens when you’re as good as he is.”

Ada needed a 3-pointer late in the second quarter by Trey Havens to take a slim 24-23 halftime lead.

After a back-and-forth third period, Ada led 35-33 heading into the final eight minutes.

Gilliam just missed double digits with nine points, while Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers for six.

Seminole got double-figure scoring from three players. Wilkins led the team with 16 points. Brinker finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, and Deyton Jackson added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Chieftains finished the game 15-of-20 from the free-throw line, compared to a 4-of-8 effort from the Cougars.

Ada hosts Class 6A No. 20 Shawnee Friday night to close out its pre-holiday slate.

“It doesn’t get any easier Friday. We have to let this game go, come back tomorrow and try to get better and get ready for Shawnee,” Parks said.
